Welcome to the YA Indie Carnival,
ladies & gents!
This week’s topic is…
Name that Tune!
Music. It’s tangible. It’s metaphysical. It’s tone. It’s mood. It’s story. It’s poetry. It’s harmony. It’s emotion. It’s rhythm. It’s beauty.
It’s the human heart laid bare. It touches the deepest places inside our souls, making us weep with longing or dance with joyful abandon. It’s such an intricate part of who we are as humans — both easy to describe, and yet impossible to define.
Whatever else it may be, music is most certainly inspirational. Because it’s all the things listed above, because it allows up to tap into buried parts of ourselves, because it evokes such potent emotion, authors time and time again have cited music to be an essential part of novel writing and the creation process.
While I’m not a novelist, I will admit that I do seek out songs on my playlist that fit the tone of a book that I’m currently reading or that I’ve just finished. Maybe that’s silly, but for me to love a song, it has to have a story I can ascribe to it — one that’s either being told through the song itself, that fits a story I know, or that’s just waiting for a good story to come along. I need background, a context into which I can place the lyrics, for me to really fall for a tune. Any of you like that? Don’t tell me I’m the only one…
Anyway, here are five songs I currently have on my playlist right now:
1.) My current favorite band… Mumford & Sons’ THE CAVE. Their lyrics are so insightful, I love their slightly raw, folksy sound. This song doesn’t have a story yet for me yet… but it’s clearly begging for one, isn’t it?
4.) KISS IT BETTER by He is We. I tend to gravitate towards songs that are a bit on the melancholy side. I don’t really consider myself to be a sad, morose kind of person in general, but sad songs just tug at me a little bit more. This song is so desperately sad, about a guy whose love is killed right in front of him. He gets revenge on the guy that did it, but… well, you can listen and see for yourself. Grab your tissues… it’s a sad ‘un.
5.) WHY DO YOU LET ME STAY HERE? by She & Him. The ultimate daydream. This song is super cute and makes me smile for the pure whimsy and fun of it… plus Zooey & JGL are adorable. He needs to ditch Scarlett, and smooch just Zooey ’til they’re old and gray. <happy sigh> I just LOVE this song + video. It makes me fall in love with falling in love, and makes me smile ’til my cheeks hurt.
So what about you? What songs are you currently crushing on?
