The the Book Blogger Hop is weekly event hosted by Crazy for Books that helps bloggers and readers connect with fellow book lovers!
This week’s question is:
“What keeps you reading beyond the first few pages of a book, and what makes you want to stop reading a book and put it back on the shelf?“
I try to make an honest effort to finish all the books I start, but bad characterization, bad dialogue and bad grammar are my biggest reasons for not continuing on with a book. I do download a lot of Kindle samples that I never buy the books for, but in regards to books I’ve purchased in 2011, so far there’s only been one that I just couldn’t make myself finish…so I think that’s pretty good.
What about you? What causes you to abandon certain books over others?

Stopping by from the hop. I’m a new follower.
My answer is similar to yours. I try to finish every book I start but bad characters and bad writing makes me want to put the book down.
Have a nice weekend.

Oh yes, I am so character driven if you mess that up, I’m gone. I try to finish as well, but sometimes, it really is better to quit and call a spade a spade. Thank you for stopping by my hop!
You really hit the nail on the head…bad characterization, dialogue, and grammar!!! Those are definite problems!
Great answer

Hi! I’m Izzy, and I’m just stopping by your blog on the Blog Hop. I agree with you. If the story itself is kind of boring, I can usually power through it, but if it’s the writing where the problem lies, I can’t always make it through. Bad grammar turns me off more than anything.
My Words Ate Me
These book blogger hop questions just get better and better. This one looks easy but I think it’s a trick question. We all know it’s the same answer – the writing – but we all have different perspectives of what good writing is.
Hop on over to my blog at http://www.howardsherman.net and read my three-prong answer as I explain why I’ll decide to pick up a book or put it down in under sixty seconds.
Happy July 4th Weekend!

I agree, bad grammer is one of my biggest peeves. But hey, if the story is good, I can probably get through it.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!
I have to agree with you on language usage too. It’s important for a book.
Thank you all for stopping by and commenting!
I’ve tried to get to all your wonderful blogs too. It’s fun seeing what about a book either annoys or engages people…lol
Hey! New follower! I love that you also take advantage of Kindle samples. I do that ALL the time…it makes it easier to decide if it’s worth the effort to track down a copy of the book or not.

@Kaye…lol…well, I guess if we’re counting Kindle samples, I give up on books a lot more than I originally let on. But it is useful to decide whether or not a book is worth your time. Thanks for commenting!
I agree, I definitely don’t want to waste my time if I don’t have to. I try to finish them too, but ultimately if I’m not enjoying it or it is hurting my brain to read it, I move on. Thanks for stopping by my blog! ^_^

Hopping through. I usually am generous with books, but bad dialogue and bad grammar are two of the biggest turn offs.
