There are good reasons Peru is off-limits to Magnus Bane. Follow Magnus’s Peruvian escapades as he drags his fellow warlocks Ragnor Fell and Catarina Loss into trouble, learns several instruments (which he plays shockingly), dances (which he does shockingly), and disgraces his host nation by doing something unspeakable to the Nazca Lines. This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. This story in The Bane Chronicles, What Really Happened in Peru, is written by Sarah Rees Brennan and Cassandra Clare. (Goodreads summary)
I <3 Magnus. He is probably my favorite character from The Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices series. I simply adore his wit and charm and ability to steal a scene without even trying. I also love the complexity of his character and the fact that his depth seems…bottomless. I’ve told Dani on more than one occasion that the more I learn about him, the more questions I find that I have. This is certainly the case with What Really Happened in Peru.
In this story, we follow Magnus and a few other minor characters from TMI and TID through their adventures in Peru. It’s delightfully entertaining as only Magnus can be. Combining the genius of Sarah Rees Brennan and Cassandra Clare provides and interesting and insightful look into Magnus’ character. And though again, I was left with more questions, I felt that I got to know a more vulnerable side of Magnus. He honestly breaks my heart a bit, and I wish with all my heart he can find some happiness in the end.
Overall, while this story doesn’t add a whole lot to the overall plot of the series, it does give priceless insight into a dear character.
– Necessary? It pains me to say it but no, I don’t think so.
– POV? Magnus
-Where does it fit? This is almost impossible to answer because it fits in several points of the series as a whole.
-Prior Knowledge needed? It certainly helps.
