And today we’re celebrating the fourth book in the Covenant Series…
Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex. Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back. The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries. Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.
Disclaimer: As a review of the 4th book in this series, this review is potentially spoilery. Reader, be warned.
After reading Deity and Elixir, I’ll admit I was a tiny bit trepidatious about starting Apollyon. I mean how to you top that? Heck, how do you even come close to that? However, that wasn’t even what I was most worried about. Apollyon was one of those books that I started already cringing for the emotional onslaught about to ensue. Since the beginning, I have been firmly Team Aiden. I have never wavered in this. So, after reading Elixir, one could safely say, I was a bit worried about my dear Alex.
Elixir leaves off with Aiden deciding to let Alex come down off the elixir and determining to fight for Alex with Alex, even if it/she kills him. When I started Apollyon and got back into Alex’s point of view, well she’s a bit different to say the least. To be honest, she is practically vomit-inducing in her devotion to Seth, but most disturbing is her complete lack of the ability to think for herself because of the connection between her and The First. For a character as strong willed and uncontrollable as Alex, this was completely jarring and heartbreaking. Jennifer did a fabulous job portraying this difference in Alex.
Alas, despite the complete transformation of Alex in a Seth-lover, I am a hopelessly romantic optimist and I was holding out for a “love conquers all, happily ever after.” I’m not going to tell you what we end up with. Muahahahaha cackle cackle! All I will say is that chapter 6 was beautifully written and made me cry copious amount of tears.
As usual, the characters were awesome. We get to meet more gods and get to know some secondary characters a lot better. The plot is tight and well-developed and furthers the story toward it’s epic conclusion. I only had two gripes with the story, I felt like their time in the Underworld was super easy compared to everything they have gone through. It just seemed like a relatively easy errand comparatively speaking. Also, I felt like the ending was a bit predictable. I’m not a huge mythology buff but I guessed the “bad god” way back in Deity and these half-bloods and pures (descendants of the gods) didn’t figure it out? I found it to be a bit of a “duh” moment there. However, the way the ending played out wasn’t predictable at all. So, I guess that sort of cancelled it out. =)
Overall, though this segment of the story definitely was not of the same “mind-blowingly awesome-sauce, beginning-to-end action rocking my socks right off” that Deity was, Apollyon did not disappoint. In fact, it was an entirely captivating read and I completely loved it. It was a great installment to the Covenant Series, and I’m waiting oh-so-impatiently for Sentinel.
