This week’s Indie Carnival event comes to you for ONE EVENING ONLY!
(Sorry ya’ll, LIFE — in the delightful form of a flooded basement — kind of took precedence over blogging these last couple days.)
…and now for…
The main attraction:
When did I fall in love with books?
I don’t really have a particular moment that I can remember falling in love with books. I’ve always been a reader for as long as I remember.
However, I do have several childhood memories that stand out to me that involve influencing my love of reading. The summer between fifth and sixth grade, I remember that our church library held a reading contest. I read voraciously. Sometimes devouring several books a day and at the end of the summer I believe I won that contest by reading 100+ books. I also remember being very excited about Book It! Do any of you remember Book It? Books and pizza…does it get any better than that? Anyway, I was always really excited about Book It (or maybe it was the personal pan pizza) and always made sure that I met the goal for the month. While these first two memories are of reading for incentives, they did ultimately drive me to READ and to keep my nose in a book, and it helped to develop my reading habits even today.
The third memory I’ve already shared on here, but my Dad would read The Hobbit aloud to my siblings and I when we were growing up. This was my first introduction to Tolkien and his intricately created, in-depth fantasy world. This more than anything is probably the event that caused me to fall in love with stories of things “other.” So thanks Dad, for sharing that love of reading and fantasy with me.
So moral of the story: Encourage kids to read, even if it’s for pizza. Read aloud to them. You never know how far that little bit of positive encouragement or investment of your time may go.
Remember to visit my fellow carnies to see where they get inspiration for their stories:
So when did you begin your love affair with reading or where do you find inspiration for your stories?
