Rapunzel is not your average teenager. For one thing, she has a serious illness that keeps her inside the mysterious Gothel Mansion. And for another, her hair is 15 feet long. Not to mention that she’s also the key to ultimately saving the world from certain destruction. But then she meets a boy named Fane, who changes all she has ever known, and she decides to risk everything familiar to find out who she really is. Filled with romance, adventure, and mystery, Rapunzel Untangled is one story you won’t want to put down. Discover the true meaning of love and friendship in this modern twist to the classic fairytale.
I absolutely adore the story of Rapunzel. There is just something magical about a girl who’s been sheltered and secluded from the world for her entire life, discovering the world for the first time. The strength it takes to realize that your life, up until this point, is a lie and then to choose to move forward is breathtaking. Add in a modern retelling and I’m in. So, when I saw Rapunzel Untangled, I knew it would be something I would enjoy, but I was worried it wouldn’t work in a modern timeline. However, I’m glad to say I was wrong.
I really did love this story. Miss Bennett do a lovely job updating this tale and making it her own. It have the innocence of Rapunzel coupled with the “dashingness” of Finn and the sinister, darkness of Gothel. The characters were very fun and the twist at the end was actually very interesting. It made me rethink some things and look at the characters differently. I enjoyed the romance between Finn and Rapunzel and the effort he goes to in order to help her discover the world. Where the story fell a little flat was that it just needed a bit more development. The plot sort of crawls in the middle a bit before really picking up for an incredible conclusion. This didn’t stop me from enjoying the story however.
Overall, Rapunzel Untangled was a very enjoyable read, a fun update to a very old story. Highly recommended to anyone who loves a great fairy tale.
