“History is on repeat, and things didn’t go so well the last time. “
Alexandria isn’t sure she’s going to make it to her eighteenth birthday–to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she’s a goner… and so is Aiden.
If that’s not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time “training”–which really is just Seth’s code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time–she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.
But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she’s caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed… and destroyed.
Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate… (Goodreads summary)
Disclaimer: As a review of the 3rd book in a series, this review is bound to be spoilery. So, please, if you have not read the rest of The Covenant Series, you may want to stop reading. Then, I recommend going immediately to Amazon or Barnes and Noble or some other legitimate resource for book buying and picking up your very own copies of Half-blood, Pure and maybe even the prequel novella Daimon. Read them right away and come back to read this. 😉 Ok, you’ve been warned…ON WITH THE REVIEW!
.
.
Ok, let me preface this review by saying I really enjoyed Half-blood. I thought it was a decent start to a series. I was intrigued and wanted to know more. Then I read Pure and I was buying into this series even more. I thought, “Yeah, I’ll probably stick around to see what happens.” Then I was blessed, and I mean BLESSED, with an ARC of Deity…Holy heavens, mind = blown. I could not in any way, ever…EVAH, not finish this series. I’ve been sucked in completely and totally by the world, characters and plot-lines. Jennifer L. Armentrout was already one of my favorite authors and now…oh sheesh, enough of the fangirliness…
.
.
So, what did I love about this book? Well, first of all the plot. Even though it’s the 3rd book and Jennifer has built her world and her characters are developed for the most part, she is not done revealing new tidbits and plot arcs. She continues to throw in unexpected surprises and completely incredible new questions. Sometimes series that continue on past 2 or 3 books can feel forced or dragged out. The Covenant Series is definitely not in this category. Jennifer’s pacing and development is completely perfect. Just enough is revealed to keep you hooked and just enough mystery is revealed to give a relatively resolved ending. However, she also throws in enough new questions and new problems to keep you intrigued and needing more. The ending of Deity in particular left me reeling. I NEEDED more, immediately. Sorry, it’s true. The end was pure torture…and I loved every word.
.
.
I also loved the characters in this installment even more than I did previously.
.
.
To be honest, Alex annoyed me in Half-Blood. She was immature and impetuous. Rarely, if ever, did she think of the consequences of her actions for herself and those around her. In Pure she had grown some and by the end I truly started to like her. But in Deity, she really starts to come into her own. I fell in love with her character and where Jennifer is taking her. She’s new and different yet still the same spunky, somewhat impetuous Alex.
.
.
Then there’s Seth. I have never fully known what to do with that boy. Part of me wants to love him and see him change for Alex. I love redemption stories and I felt like perhaps his could be one. In my heart though, I’ve always thought that Alex belongs with Aiden. So, I’ve been torn and am still torn over Seth. The development Jennifer brings to his character is beautifully done. She continues to present him as a sympathetic character throughout keeping you unsettled about him and wondering where his chips will fall. Love it.
.
.
Aiden. Sigh…Aiden. To be completely transparent, Aiden is the reason I continued reading after Half-Blood. I had to know what would happen between him and Alex. I needed to know if he and Deacon would work through all of their brotherly woes. I wanted to see him happy and fulfilled. I wanted to see if Alex would ever grow up enough to be truly worthy of his selflessness and love. His position in the world of the series puts him in a place where he could be extremely selfish and entitled, yet he is the antithesis of these qualities. Some have argued that Aiden is boring and lackluster when compared with Seth. In Deity, let’s just say we see a very different side of Aiden and he is not left wanting in the interesting department.
.
.
Leon. I have no words. Just read it. You’ll understand.
.
.
I loved what Jennifer did with Lucian and Marcus. So much could be said here but it would all be spoilery so I’ll refrain, but it’s perfect. She did everything I hoped she would with these very vital characters and thus developed Alex as well. Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.
.
.
The romantic development was incredible, believable and made my heart happy. I don’t want to be too spoilery so I won’t go into much detail but I am very satisfied with what happened there. It didn’t seem forced or in any way inconceivable.
.
.
Another thing that really added that extra something to Deity and series as a whole was the very strong theme of hope and redemption. As you can see from the synopsis there will be a game-changing event(s) and choices will be made. Lines will be drawn. Throughout it all though, there is hope. There is that dream of redemption. It’s gorgeously done and woven in seamlessly.
.
.
Overall, Deity is a rollercoaster ride of emotion. It is a thrilling and enthralling romance full of adventure, surprises and hope. It will leave you begging for more. As always, well done, Jennifer. So excited for more!

Happy Reading!
Oh I seriously cannot wait to read this book. I love me some Aiden and I’m dying to see more if him. Great review!
O=) <—that’s my angelic face, the one that says, I cannot open my mouth about Seth or Aiden without spilling much spoilerage. 😉
Ha! I knew there was something with Leon. I… just… can’t remember what I had theorized about him (I HAVE toreread Pure), but still, HA!
O=) again, the angelic face. It’s so, so, so good.
I have Deity on my self, yet to read. I have enjoyed this series so far so am hoping I enjoy this book too, thanks so much for your review.
Oooo… read it! Read it now! 😉 It’s so super fantastic!
I think it needs to moved up on your list 😉
Can’t wait for this book.. thanks for the review
Eeee. It’s so, so good!
This one’s out too! No more waiting!
That’s right! I forgot it released in December!!! =)
I really liked Half-Blood but boy did that girl get on my nerves with her lack of consideration and non-thinking. But Pure did it for me:)) Ah Seth – although I think I’ll be an Aiden fan from what I’ve seen. Though Seth is fun:))
Love how everything is becoming more hopeful here, more mature, more forever-y:))
Lovely review:)
Hehehehehehe! You will LOVE Deity! It’s so so so so good! =) Thanks for much for commenting!
I’m so very into Seth at the moment, after reading Pure. Really, all I wanted was for Aiden to just take charge, forget about the consequences and fight for them both – even if they’d have to keep their love a secret and plot their future together.
BUT the ending of Pure really redeemed Aiden.
Deity sounds awesome:)
And yeah, she annoyed me too. But Pure really made her become more thoughtful:)
Agreed, Christina! Just wait. Deity will blow your mind!
I just died at the ending!!! I want a happy Aiden and Alex already!
I KNOW, RIGHT?
Thanks for the great review! Gonna have to check out this book
Eep, do it, do it!
I have an ARC of Diety on my shelf but I am staunchly opposed to Aiden. He just creeps me in a major way so I have been avoiding reading Deity because everyone says it is all about Aiden and proving that Seth sucks. Not a good selling point… I just got my Apollyon ARC and I think your review might have made it possible for me to read this one. Thanks!!
Well, I hope you like it no matter your opinion of the boys ;o)
I skipped the review. 😀
I haven’t read any book in the series. This is what happens when you get a 2 year hiatus. I’ve missed out on quite a number of books!
The cover is stunning!
This one is a really great series! You should totally pick it up! Thanks for stopping by to comment!
I really need to get started on this series. I keep hearing such incredibly amazing things about it and I’ve always wanted to read it, but it always ends up falling behind other books on my TBR list, as I tend to do when faced with a series vs. a standalone or the first in a new series, which are less intimidating. But I am determined to read this series right away!!
You must! It is so, so, so good!
Great review! I can’t wait to start reading this series.. I have heard nothing but good things about it!
=) One of my favorites! Hope you love it too!
